The
joint creation of Alan Davis and Chris Claremont, the team was formed in
1988; at the time the rosta included Nightcrawler, Shadowcat, Captain
Britain, Meggan and Rachel Summers, the second Phoenix. Excalibur ran for
125 issues under various writers and artists
The
team was formed by Shadowcat and Nightcrawler when they believed the X-men
to have died in Dallas. The two
met Captain Britain and Meggan whilst rescuing Rachel from Mojos Warwolves,
and decided to form a team to represent Xaviers dream in Europe.
Many
members came and went over the years including Widget, Cerise, Kylun,
Ferris, Micromax, Mimic and Lockheed. Under Alan Davis the book took
a more light-hearted approach to mutant affairs compared to the angst
ridden American-based books, delving heavily into the supernatural
and British myths and focusing more on the personal lives of the
team-members rather than the usual villan of the week approach.
Pete
Wisdom arrived just before Marvels 'Age of Apocalypse' event when Warren
Ellis took over as regular writer and gave the book a slightly darker tone
as well as lending the characters a little more realism. The people who
made up the team developed dramatically, Rhane confronted the man who had
nearly killed her as a child with a maturity she hadn't shown before,
Meggan became more self-assured, Kitty grew-up, Amanda got a personality,
Colossus began to confront his past and reconcile it, Brian found
contentment as a mechanic and Moira became more of a real character as she
examined what was happening to her due to the legacy virus- Lockheed even
managed a few words.
The
team eventually disbanded after Brian and Meggans wedding. Kitty,
Nightcrawler and Colossus returned to America and the X-Men, it remains to
be seen what will happen to the rest of the team, right now they seem to
be in comic limbo.
