When World War II began,
Steve Rogers attempted to enlist in the army, but was turned away because
he was considered too frail. Wanting to help any way he could, he offered
to serve as a human guinea pig for the experimental Super Soldier Serum.
The formula worked, transforming this former 98-pound weakling into the
powerhouse known as Captain America. A star of the Golden Age of comics,
Captain America joined the Silver Age when he was revived in The Avengers
#4. He soon became the leader of that team, as well as co-starring with
Iron Man in Tales of Suspense. Following issue #99, Tales of Suspense spun
Iron Man off into a new title, and changed its name to Captain America.
Olympic-level athlete with gymnastic and combat
training. Steve Rogers is considered by many to be the ultimate synthesis
of combat skills, command, strength, endurance, and most importantly,
fighting spirit.
